Wonderful Wilfrid!

An incredible collection of eight Wilfrid Wood watercolours of Stamford sell in the 12th June Fine Art, Antiques & Specialist Collectors Sale

The group of quintessential Stamford street views was consigned by New College Stamford to benefit a new student sports grant. Having been stored and not displayed following a refurbishment of the offices, the Executive Committee decided to finally part with them and give them a chance to shine on their new owner's walls, whilst raising some significant amounts of cash which will help to provide sports equipment to students that might need it.

The eight views were all painted by Wood in 1968, we believe as a commission directly from Stamford College, and depict the following street scenes:

’Town Bridge’ 'St Paul's Street' 'St Peter's Street' 'High Street St Martin's'
'High Street St Martin's from The George Hotel' 'St Mary’s Street' 'All Saints Place' 'Brown's Hospital, Broad Street'

Each painting was offered with pre-sale estimates of £400 - £600 but there was again a great deal of interest from both new bidders and past customers who keep an eye on Batemans' sales, and the prices achieved were extremely pleasing.

Having handled many collections of Wilfrid Wood paintings over the years Batemans is always the first call for anyone (or indeed any institution) looking to sell them.

The paintings each sold for an average price of £723 (incl. 20% B.P.), or an average hammer price each of £602.50 - just over high estimate!

The highest selling was, not surprisingly, the view of ‘Town Bridge’, which made £1,020 (incl. 20% B.P.), closely followed by the view of ‘High Street St Martin’s from The George Hotel’, which made £936 (incl. 20% B.P.). The bargain of the group was the view of ‘St Peter’s Street’ which made £432 (incl. 20% B.P.).

The collection totalled an impressive £5,784 (incl. 20% B.P.), which will buy an awful lot of shirts, shorts, footballs, netballs, bats, boots, and other sports equipment!
