A rare Martin Brothers stoneware jardiniere bowl, late 19th century, of ovoid form, the body sgraffito decorated with four swimming grotesque sea turtles in swirling currents, against a mottled dark purple brown ground, pale blue / grey interior, incised 'Martin Bros. London & Southall' and dated '4-1899', a/f stapled repair and hairline crack, 19.5 by 15cm high.

Unusual old stapled repair, possibly an original fault, extending from the rim to the base but no further, 17cm long, with glaze faults to each side of the crack. A further hairline crack from the rim down the side, 10cm long, otherwise generally good.
